Academic Curriculum

The main activity of the project is the development and execution of the academic curriculum. The academic curriculum is composed of twenty four (24) courses appropriately divided into two time periods, named as first term and second term. Both time periods include, besides the courses, two university visits for the students, one at the International Hellenic University, Greece and one at the University of Ljubliana, Slovenia. The curriculum focuses on applied engineering concepts and provides industry insights in order to immerse the students into Maritime & Surveyor ICT core components, functionality, maintenance, safety & sustainability. Two of the courses are characterised as large experiments that will lead to the development of Remotely Operated Underwater Vehicle (ROUV) & Internet of Things (IoT)/Augmented Reality (AR) based measurement system. These subjects will be taught in person during the university visits and will include lab/practice work. Half of these subjects will be taught via blended classroom, where FMTS/IHU lecturers will co-teach with lecturers from partners (NIMRD, ECQA, BISITE, MUS, CT, TalTech, ENIDH, BISITE), experts in the respective subjects. The other half of these subjects will be taught remotely by the respective partners.

The table above presents the academic curriculum as has been presented at the project proposal and accepted by all partners during the Kick-off meeting. The course developers are also mentioned. As observed, each of the courses is connected to the corresponding course developers that may be either from a single partner or from two or more partners. In the first case, the syllabus development is the complete responsibility of a single developer. In the second case, the development should have been performed by the cooperation of two partners. This cooperation has been obtained by means of e-mails and Skype teleconferences when necessary.
The expected learning outcomes that a graduate of the MSc program will acquire are summarized below. Specifically, a graduate will be able to:

  • Analyze and determine the parameters that affect a marine or maritime surveying system
  • Design a complete and fully functional sensoring system for marine and maritime applications based on prespecified requirements
  • Develop a complete and fully functional sensoring system for marine and maritime applications
  • Process, analyze and evaluate the data received by the data acquisition system of a marine and maritime surveying application
  • Combine modern data analysis tools with traditional technical procedures in the maritime sector
  • Implement AR tools for the analysis and presentation of marine or maritime systems
  • Combine simple nautical incidents with current legislation
  • Develop entrepreneurship within marine and maritime sector

In parallel, referring to soft skills, the graduates will be able to:

  • Implement teamwork skills in a new and culturally different environment
  • Adapt to professionally and implement new skills and knowledge
  • Show awareness of business ethics and international values that span within the maritime industry
  • Adapt to strong changes and expose their minds to global thinking
  • Understand and respect of the values of multiculturalism
